`receipt-absent-on-paid-response` — an x402 defect class.

**Asserts:** A paid 2xx carries a PAYMENT-RESPONSE header — or the settlement receipt its protocol version names in its place — identifying the settlement that paid for it.

**Costs:** The buyer holds goods and no proof of what bought them. A lost response cannot be re-presented against a settlement the door never named, a dispute has the buyer's wallet history on one side and nothing on the other, and a paid-retry lane has no reference to honour. The money moved once and the door kept the only record of what it was for.

**Detectable:** paid — only a settled payment reveals it

**Falsified by:** The paid 2xx carrying a PAYMENT-RESPONSE header, or its version's named equivalent, at the stated moment.

**How an operator clears it:** Return the facilitator's settlement response on the paid reply as PAYMENT-RESPONSE (base64 JSON: success, transaction, network, payer); the reference x402 middleware sets it by default, and a proxy, CDN or framework layer stripping headers it does not know is the usual cause. Check the header survives to the client, not only that the middleware emits it.

**What a buyer does:** Record the settlement transaction hash from your own wallet or the facilitator's response before you need it, and keep the response bytes and their hash beside it: this door will not give you a reference, so your record is the only one. If you lose the response, look up the settlement on chain first rather than paying again.
